Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, was among the panel of experts at the just-concluded Maiden Edition of the Law Week of the NBA Surulere Branch.
Mr. Akangbe, SAN, led the discussion on “Expanding Clientele in a Competitive Legal Market: Strategies for Lawyers and Understanding Client Expectations.”
During the session, he captivated the delegates by emphasizing that law is as much a business as it is a career. He urged lawyers to always approach their legal practice with a business mindset, balancing both business acumen and legal expertise for a successful and sustainable career.
The learned silk further advised lawyers to recognize the power of positioning, visibility, and branding as key strategies for attracting clientele in today’s highly competitive legal market.
He also stressed the importance of being seen as a “value add” rather than a cost center, noting that businesses are always looking to minimize operational costs. Lawyers, therefore, must consistently demonstrate value to their clients’ businesses to maintain relevance and long-term relationships.
Among the strategies he highlighted for expanding clientele were:
Knowing Your Client (KYC): Understanding clients’ businesses to offer tailored legal solutions.
Ensuring High Service Standards: Providing quality work that guarantees repeat business and referrals.
Helping Clients Grow: Assisting clients in their business expansion as a way to deepen professional relationships.
The delegates found his insights engaging, enlightening, and impactful.
