Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, Renews Call for Implementation of Fair Pay for Nigerian Lawyers

Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, has renewed calls for the urgent implementation of fair remuneration for lawyers in Nigeria, stressing that justice cannot thrive if those who uphold it are underpaid and undervalued. Reflecting on his tenure as Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch, Akangbe recalled how he established the Remuneration Committee, led by Mr. Anthony Nwaochei, to empirically determine a fair living wage for employed lawyers. He noted that while the Olu Akpata administration advanced this work by adopting a white paper through the NBA’s National Executive Committee (NEC), the critical step of implementation remains long overdue.

Speaking on the broader implications, Akangbe emphasized that the legal profession must revisit and enforce these resolutions if it truly seeks to accord lawyers the dignity and inclusion they deserve. He argued that the essence of justice is diminished when lawyers themselves cannot live fulfilling lives, underscoring the need for transformative leadership to prioritize the welfare of legal practitioners across the country.

As Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch, I established the Remuneration Committee led by Mr. Anthony Nwaochei, tasked with empirically determining a fair living wage for lawyers in employment.

The Olu Akpata administration built on this work, and under his leadership, a white paper was adopted by the NEC of the NBA. But adoption is not enough—implementation is overdue.

To truly give employed lawyers a sense of dignity and inclusion, we must revisit those decisions.

After all, what is justice worth if lawyers cannot live their best lives?
