LASTMA Probes N100,000 Extortion Allegation on Lagos Coastal Road

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has launched an investigation into a social media report alleging that its officers extorted N100,000 from commercial bus drivers along the Coastal Road.

The allegation was made by an individual identified as Tosin, who claimed that LASTMA officials arrested commercial buses and demanded payment before releasing the vehicles.

In a statement, the Authority said it takes such allegations seriously, stressing that it remains a disciplined and professional government agency that does not condone misconduct, abuse of office, or extortion.

Consequently, it said a thorough, impartial, and comprehensive investigation has been initiated into the matter.
The Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed that the probe is already underway.

“This inquiry has commenced in earnest, and the Authority assures the public that any officer found culpable upon the conclusion of due process will face the full weight of the law, in accordance with established rules and disciplinary procedures,” he said.

Taofiq also invited the accuser to assist with the investigation.

“In furtherance of this process, the individual identified as Tosin is invited to appear at the Office of the General Manager at LASTMA Headquarters in Oshodi with concrete and verifiable evidence to substantiate his claims, as the burden of proof rests on the accuser,” he added.

He reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and high standards of public service.

The agency further urged members of the public to report any misconduct through appropriate and verified channels, assuring that it remains committed to a traffic management system grounded in fairness, orderliness, and respect for the rights of all road users.
