The Lagos State High Court was struck with grief on Monday following the sudden passing of Justice Abdulganiyu Safari of the Epe Division, causing disruptions in court proceedings.
Justice Safari, 62, passed away in the early hours of Sunday. Known for his calm yet firm handling of family and probate cases, his death left a significant void in the judiciary. He was buried later that day in accordance with Islamic rites, with mourners gathering at his residence in Sango/Ota, Ogun State.
The tragic loss deeply affected colleagues and court staff, prompting several judges to suspend their activities in a collective show of respect. While some courtrooms are expected to resume on Tuesday, others may remain closed until Wednesday as the bench reflects on his passing.
Appointed to the Lagos bench by former Governor Babatunde Fashola in 2013, Justice Safari was admired for his humility, clarity, and unwavering commitment to the law. Before his judicial appointment, he served as Chief Registrar of the Lagos State Judiciary, earning respect for his efficiency and fairness.
In an official statement, the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (Lagos Chapter) expressed deep sorrow, stating: “With utmost submission to the will of Almighty God, the Lagos State Judiciary announces the death of one of our choicest judges, Hon. Justice Ganiyu Safari.”
Tributes have poured in from across the legal community, with officials praising the late judge as an embodiment of judicial excellence and humility.
