The Acting Controller-General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Mr. Sylvester Nwakuche, has ordered the immediate re-arrest of the remaining escapees from the Koton Karfe prison in Kogi State. Nwakuche gave the directive during an assessment visit to the facility on Monday.
He also called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape of 12 inmates from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe. As of now, five of the escapees have been recaptured.
The jailbreak occurred in the early hours of Monday, during which one correctional officer tragically lost their life. Inmates managed to manipulate the facility’s padlocks, enabling their escape.
Nwakuche commended the efforts of the combined team of security operatives that succeeded in re-arresting some of the fugitives and ordered a security audit across all correctional centers in the country to prevent such incidents in the future.
He urged the public to remain calm and assist security agencies by reporting any information that could aid in the recapture of those still at large. Nwakuche reassured citizens that the safety of custodial centers remains a top priority, and steps are being taken to reinforce security measures across all facilities.
“The NCoS is committed to fulfilling its mandate of safe custody, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates,” he concluded.
