Justice Musa Danladi Abubakar, the Chief Judge of Katsina State, issued a stern warning to the newly inaugurated chairmen and members of the Local Governments Election and Appeal Tribunals, urging them to remain impartial and resist any political pressure.
While administering the oath of office on Monday, Justice Abubakar emphasized that tribunal members must stand strong against temptations and outside influences, whether from politicians or other individuals, as they carry out their duties. He stressed that any tribunal member found guilty of judicial misconduct would face appropriate disciplinary actions.
Acknowledging the high pressure that comes with political cases, the Chief Judge urged the members to follow the laws that govern the tribunals and remain neutral in their decision-making processes. They were reminded to handle petitions from the February 15 local government elections within the stipulated 90 days, in line with the Katsina State Local Government Councils Election Law of 2002.
“I urge you all to stay committed to the law and avoid any actions that may compromise your impartiality,” Justice Abubakar advised. He further warned that those who succumb to external pressures will face penalties for judicial misconduct.
The tribunals were established in each of the state’s three senatorial zones in accordance with sections 79, 81 subsection 1 and 2 of the Katsina Local Government Councils Election Law number 4 of 2002. Their role is to adjudicate any disputes arising from the recent local government elections. Following the February 15 polls, the Katsina Independent Electoral Commission declared the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as the victor in all 34 local government chairmen and 361 councilor seats.
