As the Trial of the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu Continue before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, the American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) has expressed concern and total condemnation of what it called the continuing judicial travesty unfolding in the trial.
In a letter made available to Judiciary Corespondents in Abuja and signed by AVID president Sylvester Onyia the group called on the United Nations Human Rights Council, the U S. Department of State, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the International Criminal Court (ICC) to closely monitor the ongoing trial.
The group insists that the Kanu’s trial in its present form is not just a constitutional aberration but an affront to international human rights standards on fair trial and rule of law.
In the statement, Onyia noted that if Nigeria still claims to be a constitutional democracy that it must immediately halt the charade, restore the rule of law, and release Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally.
