JASAN Foundation Launches 2nd Edition of Legacy500 Scholarship for Nigerian Law School 2025/2026 Session

The Johnny Agim, SAN Foundation [JASAN Foundation] hereby announces the 2nd edition of its “#Legacy500 Elite Mentees Sponsorship/Scholarship Programme and Essay Competition” for the benefit of final year Law Students of all Law Faculties of Federal and State Universities across the Federation of Nigeria. Interested 500 Level / Final Year Law Students are invited to write an essay as well as provide a short video recording on the topic:

“The Legal Exchange: Benefits of Scholarship & Mentorship to the Student & the Legal Profession.”

The essay competition topic is targeted at a balanced exploration of the concepts, and gives the Student Applicant an avenue to explore the mutual and far-reaching benefits of scholarship and mentorship, in a plethora of ways particularly within the legal profession, as well as to understand the intricate nature of these two elements and why they are to be maximised by the relevant stakeholders in the legal industry as fundamental building blocks for a successful legal career development for the individual legal practitioner in particular and the broader legal profession in general. It is also an opportunity for the Student Applicant to reflect on his\her university and educational future to proffer opinions on how these concepts would benefit him/her personally as vital investments in the future of law.

As an expansion to the Programme, 30 (Thirty) Applicants stand the chance to win sponsorship/ scholarship opportunities to attend the mandatory training at the Nigerian Law School [Bar Part II] to fulfil the requirements to be called to the Nigerian Bar and pursue their legal practice dreams. This prestigious scholarship covers the tuition for the one-year programme, providing a unique chance to excel in legal education without the personal financial burden.

A. Benefits:

B. Eligibility Criteria:

1. Applicant must currently be a 500 Level/final year Law Student from a recognised Nigerian Federal or State University.

2. Applicant must have a minimum of Second-Class Lower [2.2] Grade point [evidence of current CGPA at the time of application should be included].

3. Applicant must demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and potentials.

4. Applicant must show verifiable proof of financial need.

C. Application Requirements:

1. This competition is open to only Nigerian 500 Level / final year law students of Nigerian Federal and State Universities.

2. 1 Page Formal Letter of Application addressed to:

The Nomination and Selection Committee

JASAN Foundation, Abuja, FCT – Nigeria

3. 1 Page Personal & Eligibility Statement [Maximum of 500 words].

4. Scanned copy of a valid school and/or Faculty ID Card.

5. Verifiable proof of financial need.

6. Scanned copies of 1 Page Reference Letters respectively from two (2) Referees (1 of whom must be an academic from their university law faculty) both submitted along with the Eligibility Documents and ID Card as one (1) continuous document with the Title/File Name “References”.

7. A written essay of between 1,500 to 2,000 words on the topic: “The Legal Exchange: Benefits of Scholarship & Mentorship to the Student & the Legal Profession” [bibliography and references are excluded from the word count].

8. All entries [inclusive of the Formal Letter of Application, Personal/Eligibility Statement & Essay] should be prepared in font type Arial (11-points Black), with double line spacing and page numbering as one (1) continuous document and submitted with the Title/File Name: “Application for the NLS Bar Part II 2025/2026 Scholarship”.

9. Applicants shall, in addition to the essay, make a three (3) minutes video summarising and demonstrating the Essay. Using the IRAC Rule which is – Issue, Rule, Application and Conclusion, videos must have an introduction, a premise, argument and closing remark.

10. The video is to be posted on Instagram, tagging @_jasanfoundation, using the hashtag #Legacy500, and a link to the video provided in the letter of application as well as the body of the email.

D. Rules / Guidelines for submission:

1. This is an Essay Competition with a requirement for participants to submit a three (3) minutes video presentation alongside their written essay.

2. The essay must be written in English.

3. AI / Chat-GPT generated submissions are not eligible and will be disqualified.

4. Entries should be submitted as one document in both Word and Pdf formats.

5. Both Reference letters should be submitted as one document in Pdf format.

6. Entries must not include any pictures or other graphical illustrations.

7. Entries MUST NOT CONTAIN any indication of the Applicant’s name, school, number, email address, or other means of identification or affiliation. These details should only be included in your cover email when submitting.

8. All essays must be original works specifically written for the competition and plagiarism of any kind will result in disqualification.

9. Co-authorship of essay is not permitted.

10. Applicants are to submit only one entry which Cover Email MUST CONTAIN only two (2) attachments viz: (a) Application as one continuous document, and (b) References as one continuous document.

11. Current contact information of each Applicant including phone number, email address and links to ALL of his/her social media platforms MUST ACCOMPANY THE ENTRY and be stated only in the Applicant’s cover email.

12. HARD COPIES and submissions after the announced deadline will not be considered.

13. Essays will be judged by an independent expert Panel of Judges.

14. The winners shall be announced during “The Legacy Dialogue 2.0” which is scheduled for Friday, 24th October 2025.

E. What our panel of judges will look out for:

1. Originality of thought & Authenticity;

2. Factual accuracy, imagination, creativity and innovation;

3. Structural flow, clarity of thought & expression, and grammatical accuracy;

4. Depth of analysis;

5. Relevance to the Legal Profession;

6. Relevance to national, regional and/or international context;

7. Clear policy suggestions, and/or pathways;

8. Personal integrity of Applicant; and

9. Conformity to the competition rules.
