The Department of State Services (DSS) has, on Thursday, agreed to allow IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to be examined by a doctor of his choice, following a prolonged legal battle initiated by Kanu’s legal team. Kanu had been requesting access to his personal physicians for medical reasons.
According to Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, the selected doctor is considered competent and was handpicked by Kanu himself. This development comes amidst concerns raised by Kanu’s lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, about his client’s deteriorating health while in custody. Despite assertions by the DSS that Kanu was receiving adequate medical attention within their facilities, the court ruling in July 2023 mandated the agency to grant Kanu access to his medical records and doctors.
However, the court stipulated that the examination must be conducted under the supervision of the DSS, with the entire process documented for security purposes. As the examination progresses, further details regarding the doctor’s findings and any subsequent recommendations are awaited.
Ejimakor, taking to his X platform, wrote: “The jinx is finally broken. Today, a very competent doctor, personally chosen by Onyendu #MNK, met & examined him.
“It wasn’t easy, counting from last year when this should’ve happened. The indomitable #MnkLegalTeam also met with MNK today. It’s tough but we must not relent.”
