An Independent forensic investigation has uncovered a coordinated misinformation campaign involving the impersonation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, on X (formerly Twitter), and has called for the prosecution of those allegedly behind it.
The report, published by DIHIL, concluded that Prof. Amupitan neither created, registered, nor operated any account on X, including the handle @joashamupitan which had circulated widely during the 2023 general elections and was cited by some as evidence of political bias in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to the findings, viral screenshots attributed to the handle including posts such as “Victory is sure,” “They are evil in the 21st century,” and references to “Asiwaju” were fabricated and strategically disseminated to mislead the public.
The researchers highlighted critical inconsistencies in the timeline of the alleged posts. One such post attributed to @joashamupitan was timestamped at 4:05pm, yet the original post by APC youth leader Dayo Israel, which the fabricated content purportedly mirrored, was made 13 minutes later at 4:18pm on X and 4:09pm on Facebook. The discrepancy, according to the report, demonstrates that the attributed post could not have originated from the INEC Chairman.
Further digital tracing revealed that a fresh impersonation account bearing the handle @joashamupitan was created in the United States on April 10, 2026, using the email address [email protected] an address the report states has no connection whatsoever to Prof. Amupitan. In contrast, another account, @Sundayvibe00, was independently created in Nigeria on April 11, 2026, with the email [email protected], thereby debunking claims that both accounts were linked or operated by the same individual.
Investigators also pointed to the use of a professorial photograph of Prof. Amupitan as the display image on the alleged account. The image, they noted, was taken at Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU) during his installation as Pro-Chancellor in November 2025 over three years after the account was purportedly created in September 2022 making it technically impossible for the photograph to have been the original profile picture.
The report further identified several X users—@Trigottista, @Realqueenbee__, @Stevedonalds, @OchiJnr, and @MrEnugu1—as alleged coordinators of the misinformation campaign. It stated that the accounts were registered using Hotmail email addresses and operated from multiple jurisdictions, including Italy, Canada, North America, and the United States.
In its recommendations, the publication called on relevant authorities to investigate, arrest, and prosecute the individuals allegedly involved under the provisions of the Cybercrimes Act 2015 (as amended in 2024), the Terrorism Prevention Act 2022, and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.

Introduction:
This forensic research, arose as a result of the purported appearance of an X (Twitter) handle described as:
@joashamupitan allegedly registered or associated with a purported GROK e-mail address amupitanjyahoo.com without an “@”.
It therefore means that, all our expositions herein, shall be centered around the purported posts (“Victory is sure”, “They are evil in the 21st century”, “Asiwaju”) over an X handle “@joashamupitan”, made with the X ID 567086242164101120, which was allegedly changed to @Sundayvibe002, then relabeled as a Parody Account, before it was locked/deleted.
The historical trail of what transpired, for readers’ independent personal tracing of the primary and secondary sources of the initial and subsequent publications, leading to the misinformation or fake circulations of the SCREENSHOTS of certain posts (“Victory is sure”, “They are evil in the 21st century”, “Asiwaju”) at hand, purportedly showing that, Prof Joash Ojo Amupitan SAN made them, in sympathy to APC government and this current President, are reproduced below..
