Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has condemned the rising cases of extortion involving certain police officers across Nigeria.
He specifically cited a recent incident involving officers from the Zone 16 Zonal Headquarters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where ASP Emmanuel Ubong, Inspector Nse Okon, Inspector Adiewere Collins, and Inspector Kuromare Marine were accused of extorting N10 million from a group of youths.
According to a statement released on Friday by Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, the money was recovered due to the intervention of the new Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 16. The implicated officers are currently detained and undergoing an orderly room trial.
“The Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of IGP Egbetokun, maintains a zero-tolerance policy for any act of corruption and police misconduct. The Force takes every allegation of extortion and abuse of power extremely seriously,” Adejobi stated.
He further assured the public that the Force is committed to thoroughly investigating all allegations against officers accused of misconduct.
The Inspector General has also ordered strict disciplinary actions for officers found guilty of misconduct.
