The Institute of Construction Industry Arbitrators (ICIArb) held its 33rd Investiture of Fellows and Induction of Members on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at the Lagos Continental Hotel. The ceremony, a landmark occasion in the Institute’s calendar, underscored ICIArb’s ongoing commitment to promoting excellence in construction industry arbitration and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in Nigeria.
The gathering brought together top professionals in law, construction, and dispute resolution, reaffirming the Institute’s central role in shaping ethical and skilled arbitrators.
The day’s programme began with prayers and the national anthem, followed by welcome addresses and a keynote speech. The formal proceedings included the induction of new members, investiture of fellows, oath-taking, and a networking dinner. The event’s highlight was the official induction of 47 new members and the investiture of 24 fellows, including three through the Expedited Path to Fellowship (EPF). Attendees participated in engaging conversations on the future of arbitration, celebrating the values of integrity and professionalism.
Present at the ceremony were key dignitaries including Chief (Barr.) David Badejogbin, representing Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, the Honourable Minister of Housing and Urban Development; Mr. Kola Awodein, SAN, FICIArb, FCTI, President and Chairman of Council, ICIArb; Chief Bayo Ojo, SAN, CON, FICIArb, former Attorney General of the Federation and keynote speaker; and Mr. Emmanuel Dike, FICIArb, Secretary-General. The event also welcomed the Institute’s President-Elect, Chief Felix Okereke-Onyeri, and a host of members and invited guests.
In his presidential address, Mr. Awodein lauded the Minister’s support and emphasized ICIArb’s growing influence, including the adoption of its model arbitration clause in federal contracts. He highlighted the Institute’s commitment to training, ethical standards, and accountability. Mr. Dike, in his remarks, celebrated the academic rigour of the inductees and encouraged their active participation in the Institute’s committees. He stressed that arbitration, beyond its commercial function, serves the public interest and requires dedication.
The keynote speaker, Chief Bayo Ojo, SAN, delivered an insightful address titled “The Finality of Arbitration in Nigeria: Myth or Reality?” He examined evolving legal perspectives on arbitral awards, referencing both local and international cases, and commended recent legislative reforms like the Arbitration and Mediation Act 2023. His address called on construction professionals to embrace arbitration not only as a career path but as a service to justice and development. The ceremony concluded with networking and a renewed pledge to uphold the values of ADR in the construction sector.
