Ibadan Stampede: NBA Ibadan Branch Calls for Commission of Inquiry

The leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association Ibadan branch as call on the Oyo State Government to institute a commission of Inquiry into the stampede leading to the death of 35 persons at Islamic High Bashorun on Wednesday without delay.

The body noted sadly that certain individuals would seem to have been permitted to commit murder under some shadowy guises masked as philanthropy. The lawyers stress that announcement of food donations to children and widows, on the radio repeatedly, without adequate plans will witness uncontrolled influx of women and children into the school.

Ibrahim Lawal, Esq, Chairman, NBA, Ibadan who sign the statement call on the Government to arrest all the organizers of this avoidable tragedy with a view to establishing the extent of their culpability. Anybody found connected, either directly and/or remotely, must be spared regardless of the social status. The NBA leadership will be following the unfolding events keenly.

The Bar admonishes the Government to ensure that under no circumstances should any group of persons be allowed to organize any programme which may attract a huge crowd without due notification, approval and ultimate presence of relevant agencies of government. The NBA commiserates with the families of those who lost their children in the stampede.
