Ibadan Funfair Tragedy: Detained Naomi Silekunola Hospitalised, IG Heads Probe

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has taken over investigations into the tragic stampede that claimed the lives of 35 children during a funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State. The event, reportedly organized by Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, and Ibadan-based broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat, turned fatal when a crowd exceeding the expected capacity overwhelmed the venue. Originally planned for 5,000 children, the event drew over 7,500 participants, leading to chaos as attendees scrambled to gain access.

The stampede left 35 children dead and six others injured, sparking widespread grief and outrage. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Following the incident, Prophetess Naomi reportedly collapsed and was taken to the Police Hospital in Eleyele, Ibadan, where she is currently receiving medical attention alongside Oriyomi Hamzat. Hospital staff confirmed their condition, stating that both are responding to treatment.

The Oyo State Police Command initially arrested eight individuals in connection with the incident. However, the IGP has now assumed control of the case, signaling its importance and sensitivity. A senior police source disclosed that the investigation has been moved to Abuja, with further updates expected from the Force Headquarters. Efforts to obtain comments from Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi were unsuccessful, as he declined to speak on the matter.

The tragedy has raised serious questions about the planning and safety measures for public events. Critics have pointed to the lack of effective crowd control and the apparent failure to anticipate the overwhelming turnout as key factors that led to the disaster. Advocacy groups and concerned citizens have called for stricter regulations and better oversight to ensure the safety of attendees, particularly at events designed for children.

As the nation mourns the loss of young lives, there is a growing demand for accountability and justice. The investigation led by the IGP is expected to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and hold those responsible accountable. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of proper planning and safety protocols in preventing avoidable disasters.
