Speaking at The Phenomenal Woman Conference 2.0, themed “The Power of Her Voice: Influence, Impact, Inspire,” Cordelia Umuma Eke shared her journey of building a career, overcoming challenges, and encouraged women not to accept failure in life.
Cordelia Umuma Eke, who currently serves as the first female Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Port Harcourt Branch, made it clear that being the only woman among men did not discourage her from pursuing success.
“NBA gave me a lot of confidence. I realized that even though I was the only female in the midst of men, I had a voice and I could speak up,” she said.
She reflected on her journey from her NYSC days to where she is today, highlighting the challenges she faced in securing a job.
“After my NYSC, I returned to Rivers State seeking a job, which was very difficult. I’m sharing this because it is the same struggle many young female lawyers face today,” she said.
She recalled the challenges of being told: “You’re a woman, we can’t employ you.”
Despite the setbacks, Cordelia emphasized the importance of starting from somewhere, noting that the journey is rarely smooth, but that persistence is key.
“I offered to hold briefs in some law firms. It was from there I met an old friend who offered me a role in a corporate firm, and that’s where I built my confidence,” she added.
Encouraging women to stay resilient, she said:
“Be good at what you do. Don’t cry over spilled milk. Don’t dwell on your mistakes. Dust yourself up and keep moving. Don’t sit down feeling sorry for yourself for too long.”
She concluded by stressing the importance of mentorship, networking, and collaboration.
“I had mentors. I networked and collaborated. You can’t do it alone learn to seek advice and help from others.
“I advise women to be determined and work extra hard. Don’t be afraid to speak up or scared of making mistakes. Once you believe in it, go for it.”
