The Sustainable Development Goals adopted by United Nations Member States in 2015, set a deadline for the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by 2030.

Delivering her keynote speech at the 2022 AWLA Parley, Mrs Abike Dabiri, Diaspora Commission Chair, noted that Sustainable Development Goal 5 is all about ensuring equity, justice, fairness in all that we do. She noted that the issue of gender equality should be a universal agenda.

“Women should be treated as human beings. We should demand a seat at the table”, she said.

She urged women to get involved, discover who they are, leave their comfort zone so as to make a difference. ‘‘Dare to venture, dare to succeed. Don’t take no for an answer “, she said.

she encouraged women to do more in mentoring girls. “Women should support women and be good role models wherever we find ourselves”.

She noted that women need strong family support.  she urged women to be peace makers.

She ended with a quote of the famous Maya Angelou: “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”
