The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has raised alarm over the surge in frivolous court orders and ex parte injunctions, particularly in politically sensitive cases. The group highlighted the escalating political crisis in Rivers State, where conflicting court orders have fueled tensions ahead of the October 5 Local Government elections.
HURIWA urged the National Judicial Council (NJC) to swiftly sanction judicial officers involved in these controversial rulings, warning that such actions pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.
According to HURIWA, judges from Federal High Courts in Abuja have recently issued restraining orders that undermine the duly elected administration in Rivers State. Allegations of bribery surrounding these orders have further eroded public confidence in the judiciary.
HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, expressed deep concern, stating, “The judiciary must not become a pawn in political games.” He called on the NJC to act decisively, emphasizing that corrupt judges must face consequences for destabilizing democratic processes.
