The Nigerian Correctional Service FCT Command, in collaboration with Hope Behind Bars Africa, has officially flagged off the Farming Justice Project at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje.
The initiative which began in May and is currently being implemented in 4 locations- Dukpa Farm Centre, Gwagalada; Kirikiri Female Custodial Centre, Lagos; Ogba Farm Centre, Edo state and Kuje Medium Custodial Centre, FCT.
It aims to equip inmates with practical agricultural skills, reduce food security within and outside custodial centres and promote reformation and reintegration of incarcerated individuals.
The Farming Justice Project is delivered in partnership with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Program II (ROLAC II), funded by the European Union and implemented by International IDEA.
It represents a bold step in correctional reform and is deeply rooted in the belief that everyone behind bars deserves the opportunity to rebuild, learn, and contribute meaningfully to society.
Speaking at the event, the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, represented by Controller of Corrections, Agric, Suleiman Saidu Bosso, lauded the initiative and commended Hope Behind Bars Africa for sponsoring the project.
He stated that the project not only equips inmates with a means of livelihood but also contributes to food security and economic growth, urging the inmates to take advantage of these skills to better their lot in society upon discharge.
The Executive Director and founder of Hope Behind Bars Africa, Funke Adeoye, expressed her organization’s commitment to meaningful partnerships for the rehabilitation of inmates, stressing that the project aligns with global best practices.
She highlighted the organization’s efforts to provide holistic support to inmates, including vocational training, education, and counseling. She pledged her organization’s continued support for the success of the project and other initiatives that promote correctional reform.
