A human rights organisation, Save the Poor and Needy Charity Initiative (SPANCI), has urged the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Rilwan Tunji Disu, not to allow politicians use the police as a tool to witch-hunt perceived opponents.
The group made the appeal in a congratulatory letter signed by its President, Comrade Yemi Ezekiel Bello, and made available to journalists on Sunday.
In the letter, addressed to Disu following his appointment as the 23rd Inspector-General of Police, Bello urged him to prioritise the protection of fundamental human rights, safeguard lives and property, and intensify the fight against crime.
He cautioned the new police chief against permitting the institution to be manipulated for political purposes, particularly in targeting opposition figures or perceived adversaries.
Bello also advised the IGP to place greater emphasis on the welfare of police personnel across the country to enhance efficiency and effective service delivery.
He further urged Disu to uphold the rule of law and ensure strict compliance with court orders in the discharge of his responsibilities.
According to him, the new police chief should perform his duties impartially and without bias.
“We in SPANCI congratulate you on your appointment as Inspector-General of Police. We also commend your track record and believe you will deploy your experience and this opportunity to strengthen professionalism in police operations across the country,” Bello stated.
“Dear IGP, it is our interest that you protect the fundamental rights of the people, secure their lives and properties, fight crime with seriousness.
“We also wish that you give your officers, quality standard of living to encourage them stay focus and do their job with happiness because their salary is too low to meet up daily responsibilities. Their barracks are terrible places for shelters. Also Train them and punish corrupt and unprofessional officers who are discrediting this noble course and making people think contrary about Nigerian Police force.
“We also wish that you respect the law and obey court orders by this you will write your name on golden plate and reference will be made about you in future.
“Do justice always without fear or favor and do not turn yourself to toll of witch hunt in the hand of politicians against their antagonists but protect our laws and constitution. We pray that God will help you achieve the best for the Nation and end well in meritorious service”.
