Group Faults Supreme Court Judgment on Kogi Election

The advocacy group United Nigerians Against Crimes (UNAC) has criticized what it calls a “disjointed” judgment by the Supreme Court regarding the Kogi State governorship election. Last Friday, the apex court upheld the victory of Governor Usman Ododo in the November 16, 2023, election.

The five-member panel of justices dismissed the appeal filed by Murtala Ajaka, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing “lack of merit” as the reason for their decision. UNAC expressed dissatisfaction with the ruling, implying that the judgment did not adequately address the concerns raised in the appeal.

In a statement issued on Monday the Director- General of the UNAC, Dr. Abdullahi Yunusa Bayawo, said the judgement was a “grave disappointment and a slap on the face of the Nigerian people.”

The statement read: ‘The Supreme Court’s decision is a clear demonstration of bias and disregard for the principles of justice.”
