Supporters of former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Chika Malami, have criticised his continued detention, describing it as a threat to Nigeria’s justice system and democratic principles.
The Malami Support Organisation, MSO, expressed the concern during a meeting of its members in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.
Speaking on behalf of the group, its Director of Strategy and Communication, Mallam Saidu Atiku Abubakar, said the arrest and prolonged detention of Malami raised questions about due process and respect for the rule of law.
He argued that Nigeria’s Constitution guarantees personal liberty, fair hearing and presumption of innocence, insisting that any deviation from these principles undermines constitutional governance.
Abubakar alleged that the handling of Malami’s case reflected selective enforcement of the law, warning that the use of state institutions against perceived political opponents could erode public confidence in the justice system.
He called on civil society organisations, the Nigerian Bar Association, human rights groups and pro-democracy advocates to monitor the situation, while also appealing to international human rights bodies and diplomatic missions to scrutinise what he described as growing political intimidation in the country.
The group further urged law enforcement agencies to adhere strictly to constitutional provisions in handling the matter and appealed to its members to remain calm and law-abiding.
