The National Coordinator of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Chiranchi, has called on the National Assembly to amend a tax bill currently under review to better align with the interests of Nigerian citizens. Chiranchi made the appeal while addressing journalists at the one-day National Women’s Conference held at the Aminu Kano Centre for Democratic Research (Mambayya House) in Kano.
He stressed the importance of ensuring that the proposed amendments to the bill are carefully considered to protect the welfare of Nigerians, particularly women and future generations. “The CNG’s primary objective is to safeguard the interests of Nigeria,” Chiranchi said, urging the legislature to act responsibly by incorporating the suggested revisions into the bill.
Clarifying the group’s stance, Chiranchi explained that the CNG is not entirely opposed to the bill but is advocating for the rectification of specific provisions that may harm the nation and its citizens. “The group remains committed to advocating for necessary reforms to ensure the bill aligns with Nigeria’s best interests,” he added.
During the conference, Salisu Nuhu Muhammad, former General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), also emphasized the critical role women play in driving national reforms. He praised the enthusiasm and determination of women at the event, noting their significant contributions to societal progress.
“Women are not fragile but have been labeled as vulnerable, though they are indeed the strongest,” Muhammad remarked, highlighting the need to recognize and empower women as central figures in fostering sustainable development and reform.“
