Google has expanded access to its SynthID Detector, a tool that helps users identify AI-generated images, videos and audio, and made it available globally in English.
The company said the move aims to help people better understand digital content and make informed decisions about the media they encounter online.
Google launched SynthID in 2023 to identify AI-generated media through imperceptible watermarks embedded in images, videos and audio.
To date, the company has watermarked more than 180 billion images and videos, as well as about 240,000 years of audio content, with SynthID.
Google introduced an early version of the SynthID Detector last year to help media professionals verify AI-generated content.

With the latest expansion, anyone can use the tool to check whether an image, video or audio file was generated using AI tools from Google or its partners.
The company said the detector supports content generated by Google and partners, including OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao, with Apple support expected to be added in the future.
Google said the SynthID Detector complements existing AI-content verification features available through Google Search, the Gemini app and Chrome.
According to the company, those verification features now handle more than one million requests daily.
Google said continued development of its AI-content identification tools is part of efforts to give users more context about digital media and help them assess content they encounter online.
