Foreigners won’t be deported to Nigeria – Presidency Clarifies UK Deal

The Nigerian Presidency has stated that the country will not accept deported foreigners under its new migration agreement with the United Kingdom.

In a statement on Friday, presidential aide Temitope Ajayi said the deal applies only to Nigerians living in the UK without legal permission.

He explained that the agreement, signed during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to the UK, concerns strictly the return of Nigerian citizens who do not have the right to remain there.

Ajayi dismissed claims that Nigeria would be compelled to take in non-Nigerians, describing such reports as false.

He said, “Nigeria is not taking back non-Nigerians, and the UK is not forcing us to accept people who are not our citizens.”

According to him, the agreement also ensures that Nigerians who return home will be treated fairly and with respect under the law.

He added that those affected could still travel back to the UK in the future if they meet immigration requirements.

The Ministry of Interior also stated that the deal establishes a clear process for returning Nigerians safely and in an organised manner.

It noted that the plan includes proper travel documents, careful identity checks, and protection for vulnerable people, such as victims of trafficking.

The ministry added that both countries will collaborate on information sharing, training, and improving border and migration systems.
