The International Police Chaplain Sustainable Development and Law Enforcement, an international electoral observer, has called for a review of electoral laws and guidelines to address issues observed during the recent Edo State governorship election.
In its preliminary report presented in Abuja, the group recommended enhanced voter education and mass sensitization by the Electoral Body and political parties, as well as a review of security strategies to prevent unnecessary tension and security concerns.
Ambassador Blessing Akinlosotu, Africa Director of IPCSL and head of the Mission for the 2024 Edo State governorship election, urged INEC to maintain ongoing engagement with political parties and civil society organizations to strengthen democracy. He emphasized that candidates and political actors should use legal channels to address grievances to maintain social peace.
The Group also highlighted the critical role of civil society in promoting social cohesion during elections. IPCSL urged civil society organizations to collaborate and focus on civic education and citizen sensitization to ensure inclusive participation in the electoral process.
