FG Urged to Declare State of Emergency on Insecurity, Poverty, Corruption, Ignorance

The Advocacy Council for Sustainable Peace, Security, Productivity and Development in Nigeria has called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on insecurity, poverty, corruption, and ignorance.

In a press statement issued by its Director-General, Oladosu Oladipo, the group described the move as a national imperative amid worsening security challenges across the country.

The group noted recent remarks credited to the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, on the depth of Nigeria’s inherited economic and security crises. The statement acknowledged reform efforts by President Bola Tinubu since assuming office in May 2023 but warned that persistent insecurity, ranging from bombings in Maiduguri to kidnappings in Katsina and Ibadan, continues to threaten national stability.

To address the crisis, the council proposed the T.E.A.M. framework for military strengthening, focusing on training, equipment, arms supply, and personnel motivation.

It also stressed the need to reposition Nigeria’s security architecture through an eight-point strategy championed by Isaac Alfa, which emphasised intelligence-led operations, community engagement, and inter-agency collaboration.

The group further listed the economic implications of insecurity, noting that Nigeria’s Blue Economy could generate up to ₦17trillion annually if maritime safety is guaranteed.

On anti-corruption efforts, the statement referenced on-going investigations led by Jim Obazee, reportedly involving recoveries linked to a former governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

The council called for decisive political will, coordinated implementation, and active citizen participation to translate policy into measurable outcomes.
