Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, announced that the federal government is contemplating the relocation of the Ikoyi Correctional Centre along with other similar facilities across the country.
The minister disclosed this during a visit to the Ikoyi prison in Lagos on Monday. The consideration for relocation aims to address the issues and improve the conditions of the correctional facilities in Nigeria.
Tunji-Ojo said urbanisation has caught up with the prison, noting that “there is no reason for this facility should still be here”.
He added that there is no adequate “buffer zone” as stipulated in the constitution and described the Ikoyi prison as “a security threat.”
