Femi Falana, Senior Advocate of Nigeria and renowned human rights lawyer, has condemned the recent raid on the Abuja office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
The incident, which took place on Monday, was brought to public attention by SERAP through its official X (formerly Twitter) account. The organization accused the DSS of unlawfully taking over its premises and called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene by ordering the cessation of harassment and intimidation against Nigerians.
In his statement, Falana strongly criticized the raid, labeling it an abuse of power. He urged the Federal Government to take immediate action by identifying and prosecuting those responsible for the unlawful invasion, stressing that such actions undermine the rule of law and violate fundamental human rights.
“I condemn the invasion of SERAP’s office,” Falana said.
“The Tinubu government must urgently identify the officers responsible for this act in the name of the government. Anyone found to be accountable for the invasion must face prosecution. The government must ensure that human rights defenders can perform their duties freely, in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution.”
