Thousands of Facebook users reported problems accessing the platform on Sunday morning, with many encountering an error message stating that their accounts were “temporarily unavailable” due to a site issue.
Users attempting to access the desktop version of Facebook were greeted with the message: “Account Temporarily Unavailable. Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes.”
Outage-tracking platform Downdetector recorded a sharp increase in reports shortly before 9 am, with many users searching for “Facebook down” as the issue appeared to affect the platform’s web version. Reports indicated that website access accounted for 32 per cent of complaints, followed by login issues at 26 per cent and problems with the news feed or timeline at 22 per cent.
Several users also took to X to report the disruption.
One user, Kiera, posted, “Uh oh, #FacebookDown,” alongside a screenshot of the error message.
Another user, Athan Hilaki, wrote, “Nooooo! Facebook is down?”
X user Elva C. Withrow, who posts as #ellie_withrow, asked, “Anyone else is having trouble with Facebook or is it just me? Please comment when anyone have a chance to and thank you.”
Another user, VonRistoffen, said, “Facebook crashed on the web, but the app is working fine. I thought they had banned the account.”
Posts on online forums also suggested the issue was affecting users in multiple countries, with many saying the desktop version was unavailable while the mobile app continued to function normally.
As of the time of filing this report, Meta had not issued an official statement explaining the cause of the disruption.
