The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed a fresh criminal charge against the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria ( CBN), Godwin Emefiele, at the Federal Capital Territory ( FCT) High Court.
In the new eight-count charge, the commission alleged that Emefiele stole and unlawfully acquired 753 housing units at Plot 109, Cadastral Zone C09, Lokongoma District, Abuja.
The court document was seen by journalists on Saturday.
The charge followed the ex-CBN governor’s move to reclaim the properties.
Emefiele had approached the Court of Appeal to set aside the ruling which gave the Federal Government the control of the estate.
The EFCC also accused the former top banker of holding possession of billions of naira in proxy accounts while in office.
According to the anti-graft agency,
Emefiele conspired with his personal assistant, Eric Ocheme, who is reportedly on the run, to acquire the properties in August 2021.
The commission equally alleged that between January and December 2019, Emefiele had ₦167 million suspected to be proceeds of fraud in a proxy account with Zenith Bank in Abuja. .
