EFCC Chairman Dismisses Claims of Political Targeting, Says More Ruling Party Members Prosecuted

Ola Olukoyede, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has rejected allegations that President Bola Tinubu is using the agency to target opposition party members, calling the claims a distraction from the President’s focus on governance. Speaking on Wednesday, Olukoyede emphasized that Tinubu’s priority is the performance of heads of ministries and agencies, not political vendettas.

“Nigerians should appreciate the kind of president we have. His body language is clear: ‘What have you done? How much have you recovered?’ He doesn’t have time for these distractions,” Olukoyede said, addressing critics who accuse the EFCC of silencing opposition voices.

Refuting claims of bias, Olukoyede revealed that the EFCC has prosecuted more members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) than opposition figures in high-profile cases. “If you check our statistics, particularly investigations and prosecutions, you will find more members of the ruling party among our cases. Judging us unfairly is unwarranted,” he stated. He added that ignoring opposition members’ infractions to avoid criticism would be unjust.

Olukoyede also addressed internal corruption within the EFCC, disclosing that 27 staff members have been dismissed for various infractions since he took office. “Everyone fighting corruption must operate with integrity. Without it, progress is nearly impossible,” he said, noting that several pending cases are under active investigation.

The EFCC Chairman urged Nigerians to judge the Commission’s work fairly, emphasizing its commitment to impartial anti-corruption efforts.
