The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) has condemned the petition filed by former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, describing it as a ploy that threatens the peace and stability of Kebbi State.
The petition, submitted on September 10, 2023, accused Governor Nasir Idris and other All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders of plotting to import thugs and illegal arms into the state.
DWI dismissed the allegations as false and unfounded, warning that such claims were capable of inciting fear and unrest in Kebbi, a state long known for its tranquility and communal harmony.
In a statement signed by its Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. Tunji Bamidele, the group alleged that Malami had himself been linked to acts of political violence, including a recent condolence visit to Birnin Kebbi where thugs reportedly mobilized under his influence attacked the APC State Secretariat.
DWI argued that this marked a sharp departure from the peaceful political culture of Kebbi and raised concerns about Malami’s role in fomenting unrest.
The group accused Malami of importing political thugs from Sokoto and other neighboring states, leading to violent clashes in Birnin Kebbi.
DWI maintained that the petition was a deliberate attempt to create chaos and division in the state and insisted that Malami should be held accountable. It called for his immediate arrest and prosecution, stressing that his actions endangered lives and weakened democratic institutions.
The group also urged the National Assembly and security agencies to take the matter seriously and act decisively to protect peace and stability in Kebbi State.
