The Labour Party (LP) in Delta State has expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the recently concluded council polls in Aniocha South Local Government Area. The party has filed a petition with the Delta State Local Government Election Petition Tribunal in Asaba, requesting the cancellation of the election results. The LP’s petition alleges “substantial non-compliance with the provisions of the electoral act.”
The election results declared Jude Chukwunweike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner. In its petition, the LP has named the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC), Jude Chukwunweike, and the PDP as the first, second, and third respondents, respectively.
The LP is challenging the validity of the election process and its results.
According to LP: “We argue that the election did not occur in nearly all DSIEC wards in Aniocha South, leaving thousands of eligible voters unable to exercise their franchise due to the absence of voting materials at their units.”
Additionally, LP alleged: “None of our agents signed the purported result sheets that DSIEC allegedly falsified to declare the PDP candidate as the winner [which] ‘s an action that violates electoral laws.”
