Dele Farotimi: Organization, Activists Plan Nationwide Protest Against Nigerian Judiciary

A rights advocacy organization, Take It Back Movement, along with activists such as Omoyele Sowore, have finalized plans to organize a nationwide protest in response to the arrest and detention of human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi.

The media has been flooded with reports since Tuesday about Farotimi’s arrest by officers from the Ekiti State Police Command.

Farotimi faces accusations of defaming and maligning the reputation of legal expert and founder of Afe Babalola University, Aare Afe Babalola SAN, in his recently released book, ‘Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System’.

The activist was brought before the Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday.

Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun ordered that he be remanded in prison and adjourned the case until December 10.

This incident has sparked widespread outrage across the country, with many Nigerians demanding his immediate release.

On Thursday, the Take It Back Movement announced on its official X account that the protest is set for December 10.

As indicated in the protest flyer, demonstrators are set to gather at various locations, including Afe Babalola Chambers in Lagos, the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja, the Police Headquarters in Ado-Ekiti, and King’s College Campus in London.

Likewise, Sowore, in a series of posts on his social media, has called for a global uprising against the Nigerian judiciary starting from December 10.
