The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended Ms. Theresa Ushie, Chairperson of Bekwarra Local Government Council, for three months following fresh allegations of corruption and misconduct.
The decision was taken after the House reviewed a resolution submitted by the Bekwarra Local Government Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. Alongside the suspension, lawmakers have set up an investigative committee to probe the claims against Ushie.
This move comes just three months after councillors previously attempted to impeach the chairman over similar accusations, including abuse of power and unethical conduct.
During the deliberation, Speaker of the House, Mr. Elvert Ayambem, cited Section 14(3) of the Cross River Local Government Laws, 2025, as the legal basis for the suspension.
In Ushie’s absence, Vice Chairman Mr. Egbung Odama will oversee the council’s affairs in an acting capacity.
Ayambem urged the investigative panel to carry out its duties with transparency and fairness, stressing the importance of restoring public trust in local governance
