Court Orders Detention of Woman Accused of Breaking Toddler’s Leg with Pestle in Enugu

An Enugu State magistrate court has ordered the remand of Mrs. Ada Ogbogu at the Enugu Correctional Centre following allegations of assaulting her three-year-old stepson, causing severe injuries. The police informed the court that Mrs. Ogbogu allegedly inflicted grievous harm, an offense punishable by life imprisonment under Enugu law.

According to the charge (CME/646C/2024), Mrs. Ogbogu is accused of committing the assault on October 23, 2024, at Ike Ani Estate, Emene, Enugu. She reportedly poured hot water on the child’s nose and mouth and struck him with a pestle, which led to a dislocation in his left leg and severe bodily harm. This act, the police said, was committed with intent to maim or disfigure, violating Section 288 (a) of the Enugu State Criminal Code.

Chief Magistrate Alphonsus Edeh denied her bail application, ordering her to be held at the Correctional Centre until the case resumes on November 26, 2024, pending a report from the Director of Public Prosecutions, Ministry of Justice, Enugu.

Enugu State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, expressed firm support for the prosecution. “The swift action by the State Government in arresting the accused and bringing her to court demonstrates Governor Peter Mbah’s commitment to safeguarding children’s rights,” she stated. “Let this serve as a warning: if you harm a child in Enugu State, you will face serious consequences.”
