In its relentless push towards a full digital transformation, the Federal High Court has launched its Electronic Filing (E-Filing) System in Lagos, ending the era of paper-based processes.
At the ceremony, the chief judge of the court, Justice John Tsoho, described the digital transition as the end of an outdated, paper-driven era in judicial administration.
Justice Tsoho pointed out that the initiative is a significant step toward enhancing efficiency, transparency, and service delivery within the Nigerian judiciary.
He said, “For too long, the corridors of the Federal High Court have been associated with the heavy presence of case files and tedious manual filing processes that belong to a previous era.”
He also stressed that the e-filing platform goes beyond mere technological advancement; it is a fundamental step toward embedding efficiency, transparency, and integrity into the judicial process.
“We are not just installing software; we are removing barriers that have historically hindered the progress of justice,” he added.
Justice Tsoho noted that the reform aligns with the directives of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, who has consistently promoted the integration of technology into court processes.
He pointed out that digital transformation in the judiciary is no longer optional.
“We do not have the luxury of opting out of progress,” he affirmed.
The Chief Judge also warned that the new platform will close loopholes that have been exploited in the past, noting that the e-filing system leaves a digital footprint, prevents backdating, and facilitates real-time tracking of filed motions.
Also speaking at the launch, the Chief Judge of Borno State, Justice Kashim Zannah, said the move would improve efficiency, transparency and access to justice.
Justice Zannah, who is also the Chairman of the Judicial Information Technology Policy Committee (JITPOCOM) of the National Judicial Council (NJC), revealed that lawyers can now file cases in the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court remotely from anywhere in Nigeria.
He further maintained that “Digitalising court processes is no longer a matter of choice but of necessity if the judiciary is to effectively and efficiently discharge its duties to the satisfaction of citizens.”
Justice Zannah said the NCMS, e-filing portal and LegalMail platform were designed to create a seamless electronic ecosystem that allows cases to be filed online, managed efficiently by courts and transferred smoothly through the judicial hierarchy in the event of appeals.
