Court Dismisses FG’s Application For Kyari’s Extradition To US

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit filed to extradite suspended ‘supercop’, former Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari to the United States in relation to cyber-fraud.

While delivering his judgment on Monday, the trial judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo said the dismissal was due to a pending court case filed by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

While citing Section 3 of Nigeria’s Extradition Law, he submitted that the law forbids the country to extradite a criminal when he is being faced with a case already. Hence, the dismissal of the application.

Recall that Kyari has been sought on extradition to the U.S. to answer a case over his alleged link with Ramon Abass, well known as Hushpuppi, in a $1.1m fraud committed against a Qatari businessman.

However, he and six others are currently facing trials related to drug trafficking.
