The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere‑Ekun, has acknowledged the significant role of the annual Judiciary Sports Competition in fostering unity, morale, and wellbeing within the judicial workforce, thereby enhancing the effective delivery of justice.
Declaring open the 31st edition of the competition at the Uyo Township Stadium, Akwa Ibom State, the CJN noted that beyond recreation, the event has consistently strengthened bonds among staff, promoted discipline, and contributed to a healthier, more cohesive judicial system.
“The Judiciary is often perceived solely through its solemn responsibilities of interpreting the law, resolving disputes, and safeguarding constitutional rights. Yet, behind these formalities stand a dedicated workforce whose mental clarity, physical wellbeing, and emotional balance are vital to the proper functioning of our justice system,” she stated.
Represented by Justice Uchechukwu Onyemenam, Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Calabar Division, Kekere‑Ekun stressed that sports nurture camaraderie, strategic thinking, and healthy competition, values that mirror those underpinning judicial life — teamwork, resilience, fairness, integrity, and respect.
She commended the National Sports Association for the Judiciary (NASAJ) for its steadfast commitment to promoting wellbeing and unity within the judicial family, and expressed appreciation to Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State for hosting the event and supporting the judiciary.
The CJN emphasized that the competition unites individuals across departments, cadres, and backgrounds, reinforcing shared purpose and mutual encouragement. She added that the values cultivated through sports directly influence public confidence in the courts.
In her welcome address, the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaette Obot, thanked God for the safety of participants and assured organisers of the availability of standard sporting facilities to ensure effective and healthy competition.
