Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has described claims of an ongoing “Christian genocide” in Nigeria as a deliberate attempt to discredit Shariah law and fuel Islamophobia.
Gumi, in a post shared on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday, said the narrative of Christian persecution was being promoted by certain groups to undermine Islam and portray Muslims as violent extremists.
He said: “After the fog has cleared. The alleged ‘Christian genocide’ in Nigeria is all about a well-drawn-out plan to attack the Shariah Law and Islamophobia.”
US President Donald Trump had earlier designated Nigeria as a country of particular concern, further threatening military action against Nigeria.
The US President cited what he described as ongoing violence against Christians and the failure of the government to protect religious minorities.
However, the Nigerian government strongly denied persecution of any religious group in Nigeria.
