AWLA Nigeria is delighted to congratulate all the 87 newly appointed SANs on their recent conferment with the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
Sadly though, from the time the first female recipient of the rank of SAN, Mama Folake Solanke SAN (which was awarded to her in 1981) till date, only about 4% of lawyers awarded with the highest level in the Nigerian legal profession are female, meanwhile, women make up approximately 40% of all lawyers in Nigeria.
This is proof that there is a dire need for more inclusion of Women in this high echelon of the legal profession in Nigeria. The countryโs gender parity ambitions are undermined by the heavily patriarchal nature of Nigerian society, leading to the inadequate representation of women at this level. This needs to be corrected.
Law firms need to have in place policies that enable women to fulfill their professional and familial roles more effectively and more women in the Academia need to be recognized for their hard work.
Congratulations again!
Warm regards,
