ASUU: Our Mates In Kogi Have Graduated, FUL Students Lament

Students from various universities across the country who have been stranded by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike have praised Kogi State governor and presidential aspirant Yahaya Bello for his reformation of the state’s education sector.

On February 14, this year, the union went on a month-long warning strike, which was extended by another eight weeks and ended on Monday, May 9, 2022, before an indefinite strike was declared. ASUU delegation has met with the government delegation on a few occasions but all ended in deadlock.

During a protest against the unending strike, the students of federal University Lokoja chanted with placards about the delays caused by the disagreement between the Federal Government and ASUU. They complained that while their colleagues at Kogi State University, now known as Prince Audu Abubakar University, are attending classes without obstruction, they have been out of schools for months now with no end in sight.

According to reports, no state-owned institution in Kogi has gone on strike in the last five years. On July 18, 2017, Bello proscribed the Kogi State chapter of ASUU after the government was unable to force academic staff to return to class despite several appeals.

It’s believed that the governor is been sought after by young Nigerians for his exceptional education model and security system.
