25 soldiers and one officer have been convicted by the Nigerian Army with various offenses in a military court in Enugu.
The court martial was opened yesterday by Major-Gen. Hassan Dada, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 82 Division.
He claimed that the people in question came from a number of formations within the division, which includes the South-East states and Cross River.
The GOC emphasized that the court martial was one method the military employed to instill discipline in its members.
Dada said: “Let me assure you that this court-martial will be guided by the principle of natural justice and fair hearing as encapsulated in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended and to other extant laws and procedures related to your trial.
“The court is free from any external influences and we will ensure adequate time and facilities to ensure you defend yourselves.”
He urged the defence counsel to avoid unnecessary adjournment and time wasting.
