Apple Seeks Partnership with OpenAI or Anthropic to Power its Virtual Assistant, Siri

American tech giant Apple Inc. is in advanced talks with artificial intelligence companies OpenAI and Anthropic PBC to include their large language models (LLMs) into Siri, the company’s well-known virtual assistant.

This possible partnership points to a major shift in Apple’s AI strategy as it looks to improve Siri’s functionality and more successfully compete with competing AI helpers.

Recent sources claim that Apple has discussed training customized versions of its AI models with both Anthropic, which is well-known for its Claude models, and OpenAI, which is the company behind ChatGPT.

Then, Apple’s cloud infrastructure—more especially, its Private Cloud Compute servers, which are driven by top-tier Mac chips—would host these customized models. This strategy seeks to leverage state-of-the-art external AI technologies while putting user privacy first.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg claims that the iPhone manufacturer has discussed with both businesses the possibility of utilizing Claude or ChatGPT to power Siri.

According to Gurman, who cited anonymous sources, Apple “has asked them to train versions of their models that could run on Apple’s cloud infrastructure for testing,”
