Amnesty Int’l Warns School Kidnapping Threaten Education in Northern Nigeria

Amnesty International Nigeria has raised alarm that the surge in mass abductions targeting schools would severely undermine educational progress across Northern Nigeria.

The Amnesty International Country Director in Nigeria, Isa Sanusi,, who feaured on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, cautioned that both the trauma of abductions and the fear of such attacks are discouraging children from attending school.

He said: “The trauma that comes with being abducted, or with the fear of being abducted, is going to prevent thousands of children from getting an education completely.”

He noted that families in rural communities already face economic challenges in keeping their children in school, and insecurity is compounding the problem.

“In many rural areas, children play key roles in the household, so parents already make significant sacrifices to allow them to go to school. Now, with these failures, education will suffer even more setbacks, especially in Northern Nigeria.

“People will be scared of going to school, and parents will be more skeptical about allowing their children to attend,” he added.

Sanusi warned that the situation risks depriving an entire generation of the right to education.
