Global human rights body, the Amnesty International, has expressly condemned the brutal assault on Channels TV crew covering a protest at the University of Abuja.
Recall that on Monday morning Channels TV crew were attacked while covering a protest by professors against the alleged imposition of the school’s acting vice-chancellor Professor Aisha Maikudi as the substantive new VC.
The crew members were reportedly manhandled and their vehicle vandalised by security operatives in the school, after detaining them for over an hour.
Amnesty International, in a statement on Wednesday appealed to President Bola Tinubu’s administration to conduct thorough investigation into the attack and ensure that the perpetrators are identified and prosecuted.
The statement reads: “The Amnesty International strongly condemns the brutal attack on Channels Television crew while covering a protest at the University of Abuja.
“Apart from damaging its operational vehicle, the security men manhandled the crew members before detaining them.
“Attack on journalists just doing their job is unacceptable in a free society. President Bola Tinubu’s government must conduct a thorough, independent and effective investigation to ensure that those behind this bizarre attack on media freedom did not get away with it.”
