Air Peace Suspends Nationwide Flights Amid NiMet Strike

Air Peace, Nigeria’s leading airline, has announced the immediate suspension of all flight operations across the country due to an ongoing strike by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), citing safety concerns.

In a statement released Wednesday, Air Peace explained that NiMet’s critical weather updates, particularly the Current Nowcast of Hazardous Weather (CNH) reports, are essential for safe landings, especially during the rainy season’s heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. The absence of these reports from control towers prompted the airline to halt operations to prioritize passenger safety.

“We regret to inform you that due to the ongoing strike by NiMet, Air Peace is suspending all flight operations nationwide with immediate effect,” the statement read. “Without CNH reports, flight safety cannot be guaranteed. As a safety-first airline, we have chosen to act responsibly until NiMet resumes full service.”

The airline apologized for the inconvenience and assured passengers they would receive updates and rescheduling options.

NiMet workers launched the strike on Wednesday over unresolved remuneration issues, raising concerns about a broader shutdown of Nigeria’s aviation sector. The development coincided with the launch of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in Minna by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
