A Senior Lawyer and former teacher of the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Timothy Olatokunbo, has appealed to the AGF, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), to withdraw the treason charges against protesters participating in the #EndBadGovernance protest.
In a video posted on social media, Olatokunbo expressed his concerns that the protesters are being targeted to discourage other Nigerians from demonstrating.
He acknowledged the protesters’ grievances, stating that they are demonstrating against hunger and bad governance, which are legitimate concerns affecting many Nigerians.
Olatokunbo questioned how demonstrating against hunger and bad governance could be considered treasonable, emphasizing that the charges should be withdrawn.
He urged the AGF to reconsider the charges and allow Nigerians to exercise their right to peaceful protest.
“I believe that these demonstrators are being trailed just to detach other Nigerians from demonstrating. demonstrators claimed they are demonstrating against hunger in the land which is real to many Nigerians. They claimed that they are demonstrating against bad governance. When and how can demonstration against bad governance and hunger in the kand turn to treason?”
“I am pleading with the Federal Minister of Justice of Nigeria and Attorney General of Federation, Lateef Fagbemi”, he said.
The #EndBadGovernance protest has been gaining momentum, with many Nigerians calling for improved living conditions and better governance.
On Monday, the Federal Government arraigned 10 young people detained in several locations, including Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, and Gombe, for engaging in the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations.
