Abia State Governor Alex Otti has pledged to implement an anti-open grazing law, directing his Senior Special Assistant on Legislative Matters to provide documents related to legislation passed by the previous House of Assembly on the issue. Speaking during his monthly media chat on Wednesday at the Government House in Umuahia, Otti expressed strong opposition to open grazing, stating, “I am an apostle of anti-open grazing. I believe we have gone beyond carrying cows and destroying people’s farms.”
Otti noted that if the anti-open grazing law was indeed passed during the prior administration, his government would review and enforce it. “Let’s be sure it was passed. If it was actually passed, then we will take it up from there,” he said, emphasizing that modern cattle breeds do not require roaming practices that damage crops.
The governor also highlighted his administration’s achievements, including a significant reduction of the state’s inherited debt from N138 billion to N66 billion through fiscal discipline. On security, Otti revealed that gunmen responsible for the murder of two Chinese nationals in Abia last month were traced to Ebonyi State, with suspects apprehended and investigations ongoing.
Additionally, Otti announced that President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to visit Abia State before May 29, underscoring the state’s growing prominence.
