President Tinubu Will Not Attend 79th UNGA

President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York this year. Instead, he has assigned Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the event.

The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, provided this information in a statement. The statement explained that President Tinubu, who recently returned from trips to China and the United Kingdom, has chosen to focus on pressing domestic matters, particularly in response to the severe flooding that has impacted parts of the country.

At UNGA 79, Vice President Shettima will represent Nigeria by delivering the country’s national address, participating in key sideline events, and engaging in bilateral meetings. The General Debate, themed “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations,” is scheduled to take place from Tuesday, September 24, to Saturday, September 28, 2024.
